I recently completed an installation at Enso Verde, a zen-inspired senior community in Simi Valley, CA. I was commissioned by ID Associates to create an installation that would resonate with the center's goals, to provide a focus on mindful aging, the joys of nature, environmental stewardship and healthy life choices for adults 60+.
Anatta, meaning "not-self" or "no-soul," is a core Buddhist concept. It proposes that our sense of a fixed self is an illusion. Instead, we're a constantly changing combination of physical and mental processes. Understanding anatta helps us let go of attachment and find freedom from suffering. This felt an appropriate title for one's last home, the place where they will likely detach from this physical self.
Concept:
Inspired by the natural beauty of Simi Valley, I collaborated with the visionaries at Enso Verde and ID Associates to make an artwork to reflect beautiful transitions. The concept centered around using natural materials and organic forms to evoke a sense of calm and connection to the idea and philosophy of change.
Execution:
The installation comprises about 75 handcrafted ceramic stones, press molded and finished with unique textures and surfaces. The stones are arranged in a gradient, transitioning from earthy and vibrant reds greens and blacks, to lighter colored hues. This design choice creates visual movement and creates a calming gradient.
Completion:
The finished installation at Enso Verde lives in a temporary home and will move to the main building once the building is completed. I was absolutely honored to be chosen to work on this meaningful installation and I hope it adds meaning for those that will live with it.
